Teaching Undergrads Vs. MBAs: Four Observations

Hello and sorry I've been away from blogging for so long! I ended up switching departments and jobs--now I work at Yale University at the School of Management. As you might imagine, a lot of things have changed as a result of the move. What I'd like to do today is to briefly summarize what stuck out to me as the main differences between teaching undergraduate psychology majors and first year MBAs.

A note of caution before we dive in: I've only spent about 27 hours teaching MBAs and three years teaching psychology undergraduates, so it's possible that I know little to nothing about teaching BOTH groups. Also, the undergraduates and MBAs experienced different courses and come from different universities, so the differences I observed might not reflect MBA/undergrad distinctions. What is reported here is simply one person's observations from a relatively short time period.

Pre-Post Transition Post

This isn't a real post. I'm going to post the real post tomorrow. But it feels like there should be some sort of intermediate thing to prepare everyone for the abrupt change of speed ahead.

Here's a picture of an airplane.

I realize that airplanes don't look like that, but this has been a hard year for me and learning how to draw planes accurately wasn't exactly a priority. I maybe could have chosen to draw something else, but I started drawing the plane, and there was already too much momentum.

Anyway, I feel like this is becoming way more about planes than I had anticipated. Let's move on.

If, at any point over the last eighteen months, you've wondered what was happening to me and why it might be happening, my post tomorrow should explain everything.

I've been working on it for the better part of a year (partly because I wanted to get it exactly right, and partly because I was still experiencing it while attempting to explain it, which made things weird), and I'm relieved and excited and scared to finally be able to post it.

At this point, you're all probably wondering what is it? What's in the post?? Is it airplanes? And no, it unfortunately has very little to do with airplanes.* It's a sort of sequel to my post about depression. It is also about depression. In parts, it might get a little flinch-y and uncomfortable, and if I succeed in making you laugh during those parts, you're going to feel real weird about yourselves. But it's okay. Just let it happen. I WANT it to happen. Because it makes me feel powerful, and also because there are flinch-y, uncomfortable things everywhere. Seeing them is inevitable. If we can laugh about some of them, maybe they'll be less scary to look at.

Okay, so that's what's going to happen tomorrow. Hopefully this transition post makes the experience less jarring for everyone.

*As it turns out, there is a plane. I had forgotten about it (it's small and not the main focus of the post) and the coincidence was entirely unintentional. I'd never tell you there aren't going to be planes while being fully aware that there's a plane.

Cuphead, Cruelty, And Selling Unfairness To You.

Teacher, mother, secret lover.

When charming indie megahit Cuphead came out, I watched a ton of it on Twitch. How could I not? It's so pretty!

I wasn't planning to play it. I like to play one super-tough game a year, to show I can still game hard like the cool kidz. But I'd already played Bloodborne last year, and my aging heart won't take much more than that.

Then my wife got me a Black Friday sale XBox One so that we could play Gears of War 4 together, so I figured I might as well try Cuphead for real.

Because of what I do for a living, of course, all of the following analysis is being done to find ideas I can steal to make more money.

Yeah, Cuphead Is Really Good

It was a huge amount of fun. I played a lot by myself. A lot co-op with my teenage daughter. A reasonable amount with my 11-year old daughter. Turns out my kids can be serious hardcore "Die 50 times and keep at it!" gamers when the bad guys are saucy mermaid ladies.

What really struck me was how little watching the game on Twitch prepared me for actually playing it. This was because Cuphead constantly uses randomness (RNG, for short) better than just about any game I've ever played.

Ever notice how sometimes a character comes along and every fan artist must come up with their own take on it instantly? I think that's cool. (Link not entirely safe for work.)

The Deadly RNG

Just about every attempt against a boss in Cuphead plays out differently from every other try. It's not only the standard Dark Souls thing where each boss has a move set and it picks an attack at random and you have to react to it. (Though it has that, of course.)

The fights are also random in every other way they can be:

Timing of the Attack - A bull is about to lunge forward to attack. It rears back. Then the amount of time until it actually launches the attack varies. Sometimes it's instant. Sometimes it's a good long pause. And sometimes the wait is so long is throws off my timing entirely and I blunder right into the attack.

Timing of Attackers - Little fireballs run across the screen. Sometimes one jumps up at you. Sometimes the pause between leapers is so long that you think the game is broke and you get complacent and BAM. And then three go all at once. (which can be evaded, but it's a rare enough occurrence that the player won't have a canned response for it.)

Random Attack Sets - In a lavish display of developer effort, some bosses have entirely different skill sets every time you launch the fight.

Multiple Simultaneous Attack Sets - The mermaid has two sets of three attacks, one set from the air and one from the water. It picks one from each set and uses them simultaneously, for nine different attacks to react to.

Random Terrain - Two fights have you battle while leaping along moving, randomly arranged platforms. To avoid an attack, you need to very quickly evaluate the routes available to you and select the best one.

This boss made my daughter cry. I hugged her. Then I beat it quickly and she was mad at me. At least we're having family time.

The End Result

This is why watching the game doesn't convey the experience of playing it. You can't get through Cuphead with patterns. Well, some fights you can. But most of the time, you have to learn how the system works, practice with it, and perform within it, adapting fluidly to surprises as you go.

Sometimes the RNG hands you a really nasty situation, but the vast majority of the time the situation you get is fair and survivable. You just have to take in the situation, come up with a plan very fast, and execute it.

The brilliance of the design is in making a system with RNG that keeps the game unpredictable and tough but still fair. I think this sort of probability manipulation is underrated as a skill in game design.

Obvious Disclaimer For People Who Are Already Yelling At Me In the Comments Anyway

Obviously, a lot of gamers don't like high challenge games. A lot of gamers don't like missions they can fail. Nothing wrong with this.

Cuphead isn't aiming for the casual market. Most of the time, I don't either. I'm looking for ways to better sell to this market.

If you're trying to write a game that will appeal to every single person everywhere, you're probably already doomed.

Unfairness Is a Selling Point

In a game like this, the occasional unfair, unescapable death is a selling point. There are some gamers for whom such a situation doesn't induce a Ragequit. It inspires a determination to excel.

If I don't kill you occasionally, how will your accomplishments have meaning?

Playing the RNG In an RPG

Darkest Dungeon is another game with great use of randomness. When you take your party into a dungeon, you can get a run of savage bad luck. If things get bad, you can pull the ripcord at almost any moment, abandon your run, and save your group (with a penalty). The skill comes in constantly evaluating your situation and deciding when it's time to give up. If you can't do that, you will have a hard time.

I've always tried to have a lot of this in my indie RPGs. I write long games, and I want to make sure it's always interesting and unpredictable and there's a chance that things can go south quickly if you're not careful.

I give enemies large move sets and make sure that they can approach a fight differently each time. I use a critical hit system to make sure you can never get too complacent. Sometimes, enemies run for help, and it's random how long they'll hang around before they do.

(If you want to see this system in action, our new game, Avernum 3: Ruined World, is out at the end of January.)

Heck, the whole genre of Roguelikes depends on randomness of your adventure. You gamble your time and hope you get a situation you can survive.

Of course, video game accomplishments don't have meaning. My job is to create the illusion that they do.

What Is the Gain From this Randomness

Humans like to gamble, and we have loved gambling for all of our recorded history. Gambling doesn't have to be for money, and it doesn't need lootboxes.

The joy of gambling comes from the unpredictability, the increasingly rare life pleasure of being unsure what is about to happen. RNG in your game means bad luck might cause you to fail. Some people mistakenly think that this is a flaw, when it is in fact a great strength.

The ideal for my games is that, for battles of an appropriate level, there is always a tiny chance to fail. Similarly, for Cuphead, unless you're a completely superior player, there is a chance that an unexpected chain of events will outwit and defeat you.

When you lack a human opponent to provide unpredictability, randomness must serve this role and provide the surprises. This provides suspense and unpredictability. For a large portion of gamers, being surprised is a highly valued product that can be sold at a premium.

It's a leapy boi! Look at him go!

###

If you're intrigued by giant indie RPGs with epic stories and tough, unpredictable fights, you can wishlist Avernum 3 on Steam. It's out January 31. News about our work and random musings can be found on our Twitter.

Castlevania: Legends

The Short
Pros
- Another handheld Castlevania game! Yay?
- Stars the first solo female protagonist in Castlevania history. And her hair is awesome!
- Magic system (replacing subweapons) is a pretty decent idea
- More control over jumps makes platforming a lot easier
- Has an easy ("Light") mode for those who suck
- Actually has...a plot? Whaaaaaaaaaa
- Attempts to mimic Symphony of the Night with its expansive levels
Cons
- "Expansive levels" is code for "lots of dead ends"
- Graphics look bad, especially character/enemy sprites
- Music also ranges from "just ok" to "my ears, my ears!"
- Auto-grabbing ropes is gone (why...?)
- Enemies frequently seem to have only the most basic of AI (walk off cliffs or target in on you and never leave)
- Entire plot was retconned out of Castlevania canon, because having the Belmonts be descended from Alucard and Sonia was a little too weird.
- Is like...$60 on eBay. WAY OVERPRICED.
Is it legend-wait for it....-dary?
Is it legend-wait for it....-dary?
The Long
So far we've had a catastrophic failure GB Castlevania game and a pretty damn good GB Castlevania game. So for the third installment, Konami regulated the game to a side-team, KCEN, who were also responsible for the (cancelled) Sega Saturn port of Symphony of the Night. That should be an unfortunate indication of where this review is heading already.
It's also worth pointing out that Castlevania: Legends was released after Symphony of the Night, which meant my comment in my review of Castlevania: Bloodlines (saying it was the last linear Castlevania game that wasn't a remake or a re-release) was wrong. So much for research, but I'm just gonna keep it that way. Why? Because Bloodlines is awesome and Legends is bad.
Whoops, getting ahead of myself. Let's break this down, shall we?
Sonia Belmont, retconned out of history.
Sonia Belmont, retconned out of history.
The plot follows Sonia Belmont, and was meant to be a prequel to the series. She wields the first Vampire Killer whip (the one passed down the Belmont lineage for generations), and due to some weird plot things later it is implied that all the Belmonts are descended from Sonia and Alucard (?!). But that isn't super important. What is important is vampires need killing, and Sonia is the most badass person around so she gets the job done. She's also the first solo female protagonist in a Castlevania game (where Castlevania III: Drac's Back, Jack had Sypha and Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin had Charlotte, and also Rondo of Blood let you play as Maria with some unlocks), which is a pretty neat idea! I think it would be cool to have more badass female vampire killers in the Castlevania series, especially if their hair was as rad as Sonia's.
It's unfortunate, therefore, that the game she's in is pretty damn bad.
SPOOKY GHOST SPOOKY
SPOOKY GHOST SPOOKY
Ok, "bad" might be a little much. "Bland and mediocre" might be more appropriate.
Castlevania: Legends looks at everything done in the previous Game Boy game (Belmont's Revenge) and says, "Eh, what? Auto-climbing ropes? Tight controls? Single-room challenges? Enemies that actually have patterns that make sense? Who neeeeeeeeds em?" and then proceeds to make a bloated mess of a Castlevania game. It is clear that they played Symphony of the Night and wanted to incorporate some of the "open world" style decision making in their level designs. But while this sort of worked in a linear game in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse Hearse, here it's just an unmitigated disaster.
Levels have next to no thought put into them. Frequently, these "branching paths" will simply lead to dead ends, resulting in unnecessary backtracking. Further exacerbating this is the constant, reckless respawn time of enemies. Often an enemy will appear, you'll back up to land an attack and kill it, only to have it instantly respawn when continuing right. This happens constantly.
And don't even get me started about the traps. Because I'm about to talk about the traps.

Sometimes (often at random but rarely as part of the "plot"), you'll whip a candle and instead of getting a delicious heart or coin, the floor will disappear beneath you. You'll then be trapped in a room with enemies you are forced to kill in waves (yes, wave based murder in a 2D platformer) until the room frees you. You get no reward for this, just the ability to continue your adventure. It's about as absurdly frustrating as it sounds.
Sophia controls decently. You don't downgrade your weapon ever (even when getting hit) which is nice, and she has the projectile-whip that Christopher had in the other Game Boy games. What's appreciated is you do have a slight bit of in-air control with the jumps this time around, though the game doesn't use this to make platforming any more interesting. In fact, most of the platforming is delightfully bland, making Simon's Quest's layouts look inspired. This is coupled with enemies (bats and ghosts in particular) who just straight up ram into you over and over with no escape. Imagine getting hit again and again but a crappy bat, whipping and trying to hit it but missing because it's sprite is literally on top of you. This is the enemy AI in Castlevania: Legends. Frustrating.
You also got this big doofus.
You also got this big doofus.
Which is interesting, because most of the bosses are cakewalks. Well, to a point. You see that "B" beneath your lifebar? What do you think that is? Well, if you've played any other 2D Castlevania ever made, you'll say "the stage boss's health bar."
Wrong. You IDIOT.
The stage boss has no health bar. That's right, a Castlevania game with no boss health bar. You just kind of whip all over and hope he dies before you do. Great strategy.
Luckily, Sofia has this totally badass "light myself on fire so Ninjas can't get me" powerup that she can use once per stage. It makes her invincible and doubles her damage for a brief moment (you activate it by pressing all the buttons at once, thank me later). It's a cool idea, but pretty much you'll only use it for bosses, which makes an already easy boss fight even simpler.
Ceiling worms are the worst of her problems.
Ceiling worms are the worst of her problems.
Lastly, subweapons are gone. Well, sort of. You can't get the traditional ones (well, you can find them, but they're just collectibles. Yeah, I don't know either. I picked up an axe and then couldn't use it, really intuitive). Instead, after beating a stage you get a magic, which you can then switch to as it is added to your arsenal. This is actually a decent idea (allowing you to switch up magics on the fly), but it means the first few levels are super-boring as you only have one (or none) subabilities. Cool in concept, bad in execution, like the majority of this game.
All together, the gameplay in Legends is a massive letdown after Belmont's Revenge. I appreciate the attempt to add more branching pathways and change the subweapon system, but everything just seems like a misstep. Tacked onto boring enemy placement, levels that have dead ends and backtracking, and super easy bosses, and you're looking at a subpar Castlevania experience.
Plus...the graphics. Just...ugh.
Plus...the graphics. Just...ugh.
Castlevania: Legends looks bad. I honestly think it looks worse than The Adventure, which is the nicest thing The Adventure has had said about it since it was released. Everything is super thin but with a black outline, which leaves little room for any detail. Enemies have awful animations (especially after how good they were in Belmont's Revenge) and next to no detail. The backgrounds are sparse, especially when compared to the previous Game Boy games, with mostly just plain white rather than any detail. With the exception of the status bar on the bottom (where the slightly shaded health bar actually looks nice), Legends looks atrocious.
It also sounds really bad. While I appreciate some of the classic tunes showing up here, they seem bit-crunched to death when translated to the Game Boy's hardware. While Belmont's Revenge and even The Adventure managed to make do with the system's limitations, Legends seems like they just didn't care and shoved the songs in without even listening to them themselves.
I got Bloody Tears just listening to this. Ha ha ha! Urrrrgh...

I am now faced with a once-in-a-lifetime extremely difficult decision, a reverse Sophie's Choice if you will. I've been wrestling with this for a few days now, and I feel no closer to reaching a conclusion. Basically, the question is this: is Castlevania Legends worse than Castlevania: The Adventure, the same, or a little better? Believe it or not, this is actually where we're at right now. At least Castlevania: The Adventure isn't rare, so eBay carts are in the sub $10 range. Legends is now a "collector's item," which means you'd have to pay $60+ to get an actual Game Boy cartridge. That's just...insult to injury right there.
All in all, I'd probably give Castlevania: Legends a one and a half star rating, but we don't do half stars here. So because I liked the cutscenes (and the gameplay was too easy rather than Game Boy-throwing furious [with the exception of the trap rooms]), I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt and round up. I still highly, highly suggest avoiding it unless you are some sort of collector. Besides, the entire plot of this game got removed from the canon when Castlevania: Lament of Innocence came out on the PS2, making what little relevance Legacy had evaporate. You could say it's Legacy was...not having a legacy.
Yeah, that joke could have probably used some work (much like Legends! Ha! Ok, I'll stop).

Two out of five stars.

Sorry Sofia, your good Castlevania game is in another castle.

Ali's Zomtober Zombie #2!

Ok, so, I didn't want to just do the minimum, so here's a second zombie for week 1. It is another from the Malifaux Mindless Zombies set. Obviously, I am hoping to finish the box this month (I have way too many Malifaux models on the board). Nice box. Nice basic zombies. More next week!
